Wat Arun Temple
We went to Wat Arun which is one of the most famous Thai temples. When you just google Thailand it is one of the first things to pop up in the picture section, usually lit up at night across the water. I will admit it's a beautiful setting like that though maybe a bit deceiving, mostly because you can't see the water is churning and a rather solid brown color.
It was a beautiful and breathtaking temple though and there were such cool details everywhere. Saskia did some reading about it and told us that when it was being made they didn't have enough for the mosaics so the people smashed and donated their good pottery and ceramics so that they could continue to decorate, she wasn't quite sure of the english translation but said that it essentially gave them good karma (more or less) for their next lives. I thought that was really cool. The entire thing was really beautiful and the surrounding buildings as well.
The temple you were allowed to climb up to the second level but not further. The detail was pretty stunning though. If you can see in the top there is statues of three elephants in each little top window. Another thing that struck me is that in the side building the walls were white with blue and pink flowers with green leaves decorating it and it looked like the wallpaper to some English tea room to me. It can be best seen in some of the lower pictures.
The temple was huge and you could climb the stairs to the second level.
Next to the exterior of one of the surrounding buildings. It was done up in sparkling colored glass and gold and so intricate.
Only the base of the main tower and in the background some of one of the side towers.
The main entrance (I think) that faces the water, really cool and huge statues
My lunch!
To give some perspective of the size!
More from one of the side buildings.
Beautiful side building and a little garden with such funny garden figurines. We weren't expecting that.
