Beach Getaway: Krabi
This weekend we took a trip to Krabi which is right in the area of Koh Phi Phi and Phuket. It was an awesome trip and there were about 50 nonsi people there in total from two large groups of about 25. The first group stayed in a huge villa from airbnb and my group stayed at a hotel. Saskia, Melanie, Manon and I went a day before most people and arrived early Thursday morning. It was a sleeping kind of day for me because I didn't actually sleep the night before which was a mistake but in the afternoon we climbed to the top of Tiger Cave Temple which was pretty amazing. The climb was 1,237 steps to the top. I would assume the average time is about 30-45 minutes and the record is 10. That person is insane and not a human because it took us 52 minutes and 44 seconds to reach the top and we all kind of thought we would die on the way up. The view was amazing though and so worth the near death experience going up.
On the way down, everyone says "watch out for the monkeys on the way down" I thought that was dumb because we go up the same way we come down so why wouldn't we need to worry about them on the way up? Well a few reasons I learned rather quickly. Monkeys in Asia that I've encountered so far (Malaysia and here) are assholes. Plain and simple. They are not nice and they are very, very smart. These monkeys knew that we were tired, just wanted to get home, and that it was kind of starting to get dark because we had gone up to see the sunset. They also know we're kinda scared of monkeys and don't want rabies and I swear to god they can smell fear.
Anyway as we are going down they're there in droves. They are on the steps, on the railings, in the trees, jumping across the walkway. You literally have to weave in and out of the ones on the steps because they block them except one small part for you to walk. As we were going down I was the first one and suddenly a baby jumped on Saskia's bag and she screamed which frightened it. The two big monkeys in front of me didn't like that and immediately went on the offense baring their teeth and growling or whatever noise they make. I made a huge mistake and stepped back and they only got more aggressive. The one right in front of me grabbed my pants legs (thank god for modesty at a temple) and I got so scared I just gave it my water bottle. Luckily that did the trick and they let us pass! It was pretty terrifying though.
The next day we went to Railay beach which was pretty equally amazing. We took a really cool boat over and many people from Nonsi from both groups were there. We took a really cool boat there and then just hung out on the beach. There were palm trees, beautiful sand, blue water, everything. The water was even warm! I went kayaking, had smoothies, went in the water, chilled on the beach. Honestly I don't know where the time went.
It was a ton of fun. There were a lot of people too so that made it easy to always have someone to do things with. That night we did a pub crawl in Krabi at another hostel called "Slumber Party Hostel" I got to explain to a European that slumber party meant staying over at someones house and that we weren't at a hostel called "sleeping party." We have a few misunderstandings like that. The other day someone said to me "I am going to go see the movie Baby Driver" and I go "Yeah I want to see IT" as in the Stephen King movie. That just ended up being a bit of a nightmare trying to explain that I wanted to see a movie called It not that I wanted "to see it" as in also see Baby Driver...
On Saturday I went for a motorcycle ride (sorry mom) with some friends. Literally all the hospital trips from this weekend happened because of motorcycles. One girl hit a parked bike (no damage) and then a parked taxi (damage and she had to pay) needless to say she wasn't allowed to drive after that. Niklas broke his foot or something. And Wibka (spelling?) broke her toe. The only other hospital trip that I know of was Martijn (martINE) getting a bad scrape from some barbed wire that they literally saw monkeys licking so he got some rabies shots. But really it was a great time and a fun day. I was a passenger rather than a driver because I don't even want to try to deal with driving a motorcycle on the wrong side of the street while trying to look at all the pretty things. We drove for like 5-6 hours that day because we got a little lost, had to fill on gas a few times, had to sit under sheds while it rained, etc. We ended up at a beautiful waterfall at a national park which was a lot of fun too.
The last two days we spent at Koh Phi Phi and traveling back to Bangkok. Koh Phi Phi completely rained us out though so it wasn't that fun haha.
Also I finally figured out how to do a Gallery rather than just put a bunch of photos at the end so yay!
