Japan in Food
So I really haven't been doing a good enough job documenting my experience in terms of food. I was talking to a friend of mine who hates his Facebook, doesn't have an Instagram, and didn't know what Snapchat really was until I made him get one, and he said "everyone eats why should I waste my time looking at their food?"
I literally could only laugh because I always take photos of my food when its beautiful, new, or unique! It also made me reevaluate what pictures I send his way because clearly the beauty of my food photography is lost on him. So here I am compiling a few of the photos I've taken in Japan so far, I really have eaten so much more than this and I'm low key ashamed for not having more to share right now. The food here is Amazing and I can't get enough of it. I have a singular mentality of only spending my money on food. When I was in Osaka (the street food capital of Japan) in Dotonbori (the street food part of Osaka) I think we were eating literally every 2 hours just to make sure we got to try everything haha.
From top left:
1. Takoyaki which is octopus balls and a specialty of the Osaka region. I'm not going to lie I actually thought they were disgusting because they're like gooey and doughy and in the center have a piece of octopus...
2. Yakisoba with flakes on top, also from Osaka Dotonbori area, very good!
3. $1.25 sushi track we found in Dotonbori. Even in America that's good pricing and the sushi was sooo good.
4. Rice wrapped in pork/bacon topped with flame broiled cheese. Street food that was soooo good. Plus the rice was somewhat like sushi rice or something, it had something extra going on and that was delicious.
5. Omurice with curry (thank god they had an english menu) which is basically a runny egg omelette around rice with curry and this one also had some beef. It was good but I honestly enjoyed the rice and egg more than any of the beef or curry. It had a funny flavor to me
6. The most expensive chai tea latte I have gotten here that really wasn't even that good but I needed a place to sit and wait for a while so I had to buy something. Also the dang thing came in a bowl not a cup and had a spoon that was just big enough for me to wonder if I was supposed to eat it like soup or sip it from a bowl...
Onto the soups!
Okay this is pretty self explanatory to be honest. I get a lot of ramen and udon and I love it. I couldn't tell you too much about these except that the second picture is rice and egg at the front and udon in the back and I think the rest are ramen. The first photo by far was the most delicious though and the noodles were definitely made fresh that morning. The side dish to the first is Gyoza and it also had the best broth I've had yet. Delicious!
Now for dessert...
I never really had a sweet tooth too bad until going to Thailand and I think it was so hot there that I just constantly wanted to be eating ice cream or something. Anyway I've eaten ice cream usually purchased at 7-11 a few times here but never really bothered to take a picture of a bar of ice cream. These on the other hand are masterpieces (or at least 2 are)
1. A $5 slice of cake I got in the Akihabara train station and I honestly just bought it because it was pretty but I think I can honestly say that this might be the best piece of cake I've ever had in my life. It's a raspberry whipped filling under a layer of chocolate cake surrounded by chocolate whipped ganache and topped with what I imagine was some sort of dark chocolate heavy shine glaze. Directly between the raspberry and the bottom layer of ganache was a thin wafer like thing but it had the most exquisite light, airy, but crisp crunch and tasted a bit like hazelnut. Seriously amazing.
2. Going clockwise this is a slice of Osaka cheesecake (or so I was told) it's famous for being super airy and jiggly. If you move the plate the whole cake jiggles like jelly. I was expecting something sweet like angel food cake but it was actually really eggy and not very sweet at all. Not what I expected, and I can't say that I liked it, but I also can't say that I didn't like it. I did finish the whole thing though.
3. Super cute cake I bought in Osaka partly because it was cute (I have a thing for the gold flakes) and partly because it reminded my in looks to cake number 1 and I was being hopeful. It wasn't bad but it wasn't that great either. Chocolate ganache with some sort of whipped cream thing in the center. It wasn't bad but it had these like hard crunchy things in it as well but not at an even or consistent amount and I just found them off putting from what was otherwise a rather delicate dessert...
4. Simply two pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries in the center I bought in Osaka on a whim. Really simple and delicious and exactly what I was hoping for :)
So there is a quick food update for you:) Loving every meal I'm having here!
